England complete series win against New Zealand
England’s cricketers have returned to winning way after gaining a 2-0 unassailable lead in their series against New Zealand. After home captain Tom Latham won the toss, New Zealand put England into bat. Harry Brook, who starred in the first test win, scored another century in the first innings here (123). The Yorkshire batter was ably supported by England vice-captain Ollie Pope (66). It would…

For the New Zealand Test team, the past 12 months have been nothing short of a wild trip. Before the three Test matches in India, they had only won one of four series, against a weak South African team. The problems were made worse by Tim Southee resigning as captain following the 2-0 series loss in Sri Lanka. Nobody had given them a chance, either. All went well for New Zealand during the series, as they won crucial moments in all three games after bowling out India for 46 on the opening morning of play in Bengaluru. They accomplished the unimaginable by defeating India 3-0 in a series in India when they had nothing to lose. An accomplishment never before accomplished by a touring team on Indian soil, rendered the more significant by Kane Williamson's exclusion from the series.
With a spot in the World Test Championship final still up for grabs, if other outcomes go their way, New Zealand suddenly has everything on the line once more. If they do not make it to the final at Lord's, this will also be the final Test series for former captain and fast bowler Tim Southee, and the hosts will try to give him a spectacular send-off.
In contrast, England enters this series hoping to recover from their October 2-1 series loss to Pakistan under circumstances they would describe as extremely unfamiliar. On both of their subcontinental trips this year, their strategy of remaining aggressive even in challenging situations with "Bazball" has failed them, as wickets have fallen in clusters even when one batsman got his eye in.
The two-day warm-up game before the series demonstrated the same thing. None of the other batters were able to turn their starts into significant totals, with the exception of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Zak Crawley, who each reached a half-century. Tim Southee's Test debut coincided with England's most recent series victory in New Zealand, which came under Michael Vaughan in 2008. After 16 long years, the visitors will feel much more at home on New Zealand's faster courses and try to change the course of history.
When: November 28 to December 2, 2024; 11:00am Local Time | 10pm GMT (Nov 27) | 3:30am IST
Where: Hagley Oval, Christchurch
What to expect: Most days in Christchurch should be gloomy, but there should not be any rain that would stop play. Hagley Oval has historically favored bowlers on the first day, but as four of the top five chases in New Zealand have taken place here, including two in the past two years, it gradually becomes easier to bat on.
Team news
New Zealand: All-rounder Nathan Smith will make his Test debut, while Kane Williamson will take Will Young's spot as Player of the Series in India, according to a news conference held by Tom Latham prior to the match.
Devon Conway, Tom Latham (C), Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Nathan Smith, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Will O'Rourke are the likely starting lineup.
England: Two days prior to the game, the visitors revealed their starting lineup. Ollie Pope will take over after Jamie Smith is unable to play due to an injury sustained during practice, which prevented Jordan Cox from making his debut. Jacob Bethell, a batting all-rounder, will bat at the third position in his Test debut.
Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope (wk), Ben Stokes (C), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Shoaib Bashir, and Zak Crawley are the confirmed starting lineup.
What they said:
"I followed up after Steady (Gary Stead) spoke with Young regarding it. As previously stated, he is an excellent team player and did nothing improper. Although it was a difficult choice, Tom Latham said, "I suppose that when you are in a position to make difficult decisions, it shows your team is in a good spot, so yeah, obviously heartbroken for Young but thrilled with Kane coming back."

"The results of the scans were positive and verified that his recovery, since receiving the injury six-and-a-half weeks ago, remains on track for participation in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan."
Stokes' bowling prowess will come under scrutiny early in the tour, even if he is fit to captain England in Pakistan.
When asked whether he would be able to bowl in the opening Test, Stokes responded, "I think that's you getting ahead of yourself," in an interview with Sky Sports on Tuesday. I've been walking and working out at the gym for the past six and a half weeks.

Ben Stokes: England captain to have scan before Pakistan tour
If Stokes is ruled out of the first Test, Ollie Pope would continue to deputise as captain. In Stokes’ absence from the Sri Lanka series, England opted to cover for the all-rounder by moving wicketkeeper Jamie Smith to number six and playing an extra bowler. The scenario of Stokes only being able to bat would potentially leave England with a selection decision. If they were to continue with the…

ENG vs SL: Sri Lanka’s De Silva and Kamindu Mendis defy England in day two of third Test
Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva and the in-form Kamindu Mendis frustrated England with a unbroken century partnership on the second day of the third Test at the Oval on Saturday. The tourists collapsed to 93-5 before tea, but had recovered to 211-5 when bad light forced an early close. That left Sri Lanka 114 runs adrift of an England first-innings total of 325 built on Ollie Pope’s 154 —…

2nd Test: Winning A Test In These Conditions Is Not Easy; Bowlers Stepped Up, Says Rohit Sharma
Tumblr media
Rajasekhara Reddy ACA: After defeating England by 106 runs to win the second Test, India captain Rohit Sharma lauded the bowlers for stepping up to lead the team to victory in not-so-easy conditions. In day four’s play at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Monday, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each for India to defend 399 after bowling out England for 292. Bumrah, whose spell of 6-45 gave India a vital 171-run first-innings lead, was the pick of the bowlers again with his spell of 3-46. Bumrah finishes the Visakhapatnam Test with match figures of 9-91, which is also the best figures for an Indian fast-bowler on home soil in Tests against England. Ashwin bowled well to take 3-72 and is now just one wicket away from reaching 500 Test scalps. Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar took a wicket each in India bouncing back from the 28-run defeat in Hyderabad with an emphatic series-squaring victory at Visakhapatnam. "(Bumrah) He's a champion player for us, done the job for a while. When you win a game like that you have to look at the overall performance. We know that winning a Test match in these conditions is not going to be easy, the bowlers stepped up,” said Rohit after the match ended. With the bat, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a majestic 209 in the first innings, and Rohit appreciated his efforts. "(Jaiswal) Looks like a very good player, understands his game. Got a long way to go, of course. It was an exceptional knock. He has a lot to offer the team, I hope he stays humble. The wicket was good to bat on, a lot of the batters got starts and didn't convert. They are young, new to this format, it will take some time." An emphatic series-squaring victory at Visakhapatnam meant India managed to bounce back from the 28-run defeat in Hyderabad. The next game of the series will be held at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot on February 15, giving both teams a ten-day break. "This win gives us a lot of confidence. Very proud of such a young squad, to come up against a team like that. Very positive. We want these guys to have time in the middle. It's a good challenge, England have been playing good cricket. Not going to be an easy series. Three more games to go, need to make sure we do most things right," added Rohit. Bumrah, who was named Player of the Match, produced magical deliveries in the match – like castling the middle and leg stumps of Ollie Pope with a menacing yorker. "I don't look at numbers. If you think about numbers there is a lot of pressure. I'm very happy that we won and contributed to that. As a youngster that was the first delivery I learned in tennis-ball cricket (which led to Pope’s dismissal). I used to feel that is the only way to take wickets." Bumrah also said with the team in transition, it is his responsibility to guide other bowlers in going about the business. "Not the leader (of the attack) but we are going through a transition so it's my responsibility to guide them. We discuss everything, about what I am thinking and what he (Rohit) thinks we should do. "I am a fast bowling fan, before being a cricketer. It is all I have ever enjoyed watching and doing. So I always enjoy watching fast bowlers, even on the other team. I look at the situation, I look at the wicket and then I look to solve the problem from there. I am not a one-trick pony, so I will look at different things and different options." Meanwhile, Jaiswal said he enjoyed playing in the match and the wonderful battles in it. “One of the best moments when you win for your country. We were focusing on our process, what we can do. Focus on our fielding and follow the process, and it went well.” “Day four pitch had cracks, there was seam (movement). It's hard playing the fourth innings. Absolutely different (in playing white ball from red ball), the field, and ball, mindset is different. I try to play my shots and have good intent. The way Bumrah bowled, it was incredible to watch. He bowled really well in the first innings as well. Wonderful team to be part of." Read the full article
